February is upon us and it’s amazing to think that in just two short weeks I’ll be winging my way across the country to teach Tiny House Design at Yestermorrow! Tiny House Design is a long-weekend course that provides oodles of info and inspiration for people to dream, design, and draft up tiny or small homes of their own.
Here’s the course description:
Tiny House Design will help you envision and design an enriching small home on a foundation or on wheels. We’ll tour noteworthy local houses, spark a dialogue about space saving strategies, and engage in an imaginative process with lots of interactive design exercises. In the design studio, you’ll learn a variety of tools to help you communicate your ideas. Students leaving this course will take home the skills necessary to continue work on their own small home projects. Bring your curiosity, enthusiasm, and project ideas!
I’m delighted to be teaching again with Erin Maile O’Keefe who was a student in this course a few years ago. She then became a client of mine as I worked with her for a build blitz to start her gorgeous Paper Boat tiny house. Along the way we became friends and now we get to co-teach a class we both took as students!
This course has gone through a couple different iterations in name and length. When I took it in 2010 it was called Less is More and it was a full week long. (We’ve found the shorter format makes it easier for people to fit into their schedules and budgets.) If you’d like to get a flavor for it, you might want to check out these blog posts about past courses:

Looking through these blog posts this morning it’s so fun to see familiar faces. And to be impressed by how many of these students have indeed created small spaces of their own in the years that have passed since they took the course. One of the students who took the course last winter was our client for the spring Tiny House Design-Build course. (Check out The Fainting Goat - Tiny Tap House.) Inspiration is a two-way street!
I’m so looking forward to being back at Yestermorrow and to digging in on tiny house ideas with the students who have signed up for the course. Perhaps you’ll be one of them!
